Canada's Globe and Mail now Available on ProQuest Historical Newspapers

I have been helping index the Detroit Death Records for familysearch.org. So many of these citizens list their birth place as Canada. Proquest will now include the Globe and Mail Newspaper. You can find this database at many Public Libraries. October 22, 2012 (ANN ARBOR, Mich.) -- ProQuest and The Globe and Mail will streamline research of Canadian life and history by making the complete works of Canada’s “newspaper of record” accessible in the powerful ProQuest digital research environment. As part of ProQuest’s Historical Newspaper collection, the archive of The Globe and Mail will be cross-searchable with a worldwide selection of both major and specialty newspapers – from The New York Times and The Guardian to the Chicago Defender and the Jerusalem Post – significantly enhancing productivity and efficiency of researchers and journalists exploring historical events.

National Digital Newspaper Program

The National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Library of Congress (LC), is a long-term effort to develop an Internet-based, searchable database of U.S. newspapers with descriptive information and select digitization of historic pages. Supported by NEH, this rich digital resource will be developed and permanently maintained at the Library of Congress. HISTORIC AMERICAN NEWSPAPERS

Preserve the Pensions

The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS), the National Archives and Records Adminsitration (NARA), and the genealogical community have undertaken a monumental project to digitize the War of 1812 pension files—a fitting beginning to the bicentennial commemoration of a war which has been called our nation's "Second War of Independence." These images will be available to genealogy researcers and the public for free. Some of this index is now done and can be viewed on Fold3. http://www.fold3.com/title_761/war_of_1812_pension_files/

findmypast.co.uk

If you think you may have royal connections it’s worth checking out the Royal Household Staff 1526-1924 records on findmypast.co.uk. Simply go to the ‘Search records’ option at the top of the homepage and select ‘Institutions & organisations’. Scroll down until you see ‘Monarchy & royal families’. The records of the Royal Household – which number about 75,000 – will cost you 10 credits per view. Search for free - you'll only need to pay to view original records and transcripts.

Find-A-Grave

Find A Grave is a free resource for finding the final resting places of famous folks, friends and family members. With millions of names, it's an invaluable tool. If you have a collection of funeral cards, start an account and add your relatives. It's easy and a great way to share. There is also a "New Kid on the Block" called Billion Graves. I haven't tried it yet but they are now indexed on familysearch.org
